We asked Christine Feher, Superintendent, to tell us more about California Pacific Charter Schools (CalPac). Here’s what we learned:
Q: What’s one innovation or tool you’ve implemented that has made a significant impact on your students or staff?
A: At CalPac, we’ve embraced the ideal balance of asynchronous and synchronous learning, tailored to individual student needs. This flexibility empowers students to manage their schedules while maintaining engagement through real-time interactions with teachers. Additionally, our use of cutting-edge learning management systems has streamlined the student experience, ensuring accessibility and rigor.
Q: What’s a success story from your program that you’re especially proud of?
A: This is a success story we see time and time again at CalPac: Students who come to us severely credit-deficient, doubting whether graduation is even within reach, not only cross the finish line but exceed expectations, thriving in ways they never thought possible. Through our personalized credit recovery program and alternative graduation pathways, these students rediscover their potential, graduate on time, and often pursue college or other meaningful opportunities. It’s a testament to the transformative power of online learning and the resilience of our students.

Q: How has being part of DLAC shaped your approach or inspired your work?
A: DLAC has provided a collaborative platform to share best practices and innovative strategies in digital learning. It’s not just about staying informed, it’s about being inspired by others who are driving change. Through DLAC, we’ve refined our approach to technology integration and expanded our focus on social and emotional learning in the online space.
Q: If you could debunk one myth about digital learning, what would it be?
A: A common myth is that online learning lacks rigor or engagement. At CalPac, we’ve proven that digital learning can be just as rigorous, if not more so, than traditional models. By combining a supportive environment with personalized instruction, we cultivate students who are both academically strong and independent learners. Our teachers also interact with learners on a daily basis, providing guidance, answering questions, and fostering meaningful connections. Online learning at CalPac isn’t learning alone; it’s learning in a connected and collaborative community.
Inside California Pacific Charter Schools: A Personalized Path to Student …
Q: What advice would you give to others starting out in digital or hybrid learning?
A: Start with the student at the center of every decision. Build a program that prioritizes flexibility without compromising academic quality. Invest in teacher training and support, as they are the backbone of a successful online school.
Q: What’s one thing you hope the future of digital learning will achieve?
A: I hope digital learning continues to close equity gaps, providing access to quality education for all, regardless of geographic or socioeconomic barriers. The future should see more integration of innovative tools like AI to
personalize learning further.
Q: What’s one challenge your program has overcome, and how did you tackle it?
A: Like many schools, the digital divide can present a significant challenge, especially given the incredibly diverse student body we serve. Our students come from a wide range of locations, life circumstances, and unique needs—whether it’s those in rural areas with limited access to resources, families facing financial barriers, or students balancing unconventional schedules. We tackled this challenge by ensuring that every student had access to the tools and technology necessary to participate fully in their education. By removing these barriers, we’ve created an equitable learning environment where every student, regardless of their circumstances, can thrive and achieve their goals. This commitment underscores our dedication to tailoring solutions that empower all learners on their unique journeys.
Q: What’s a unique aspect of your program or approach that sets it apart?
A: CalPac’s emphasis on community and accessibility sets us apart. We are deeply committed to empowering parents and students through flexible, personalized education. Our focus on supporting the whole student, including their social-emotional needs, distinguishes us as a leader in online education.
